The Berlin Wall

On 13 August 1961 the East German government started building the Berlin Wall between East and West Berlin. It was made up of large concrete walls, barbed wire and guard towers. The Berlin Wall became part of the Iron Curtain which separated the Communist eastern bloc of Europe from the west during the Cold War.
